Moulin Rouge at DPAC

I have had the pleasure of attending Broadway Shows in New York City on previous visits to the city. It is great entertainment to see live performances that may interest you. As I have written about before, we have an outstanding venue just 30 minutes from us in the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) in downtown Durham. This venue regularly gets the top touring Broadway shows throughout the year. The following review is about Moulin Rouge. We were able to get matinee tickets on opening day.

The movie version of Moulin Rouge had a great musical soundtrack and huge stars like Nicole Kidman and Christina Agular performing in it. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the touring production of Moulin Rouge. After seeing it in person I was blown away. Be ready to sing along to some of your favorite songs that go way back and to modern day classics. I heard someone mention it was like Karaoke for the audience as you couldn’t help but sing along throughout the performance.

Hearing Lady Marmalade (a high energy intro) at the start of the show helped get you excited about what you were going to hear. The play list of songs by artists like Elvis Presley, Joe Cocker, David Bowie, Madonna, The Commodores, Whitney Houston, Elton John, Queen, Nazareth, Tina Turner, and The Police just blew me away. I was surprised to hear so many classic songs included in the musical score. Those older classic songs were mixed in with songs from more modern-day musicians like Rihanna, Beyonce, Pink, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. The soundtrack was amazing and helped you stay interested in the performance. The show truly had something for everyone to enjoy. The performers were excellent dancers and singers. The performance lasted about two and a half hours with a fifteen-minute intermission in the middle.

If the touring production of Moulin Rouge comes to your city and you like Broadway style shows, then get tickets. If you have ever wanted to see a Broadway style show in person, I highly recommend Moulin Rouge. I know my family enjoyed it immensely and I did as well.
