Larry the Cable Guy at DPAC

Larry the Cable Guy

I have seen Larry the Cable Guy a few times, the last time was at the grand opening of the new (first event held there) Reno Convention Arena some years ago. His show was hilarious, and I swore I would see him again if given the opportunity. Fortunately, he scheduled a show this summer at DPAC in Durham.

I was able to get tickets for Cindy and myself and we both looked forward to seeing him. His warm-up act was a guy by the name of Nick Hoff who has been warming up for Larry for the past six years. He performed a 15-to-20-minute set that was very funny. He talked about everyday things that made us laugh and was not vulgar or offensive. When he finished his set, he turned the mic over to Larry immediately.

Larry performed for about an hour and talked about things he has experienced throughout his life and career that makes you want to laugh. I consider his routine to be red neck comedy. Cindy and I, both being from rural parts of Texas, can relate to many of the things he talks about. Larry’s show is at least PG-13, so I wouldn’t take young children to his show. He can be borderline offensive to some people, but he does it in a way that makes all parties laugh together. He always reminds people that we all need a sense of humor and to not take jokes seriously or as offensive. He makes sure to make fun of himself and his family as much as anyone else during his show.

At the end of his show, he thanked everyone for attending his shows over the past 38 years. He talked about meeting people at the end of his show that he looked up to. He went on to mention how he was fortunate enough to meet people like Janet Jackson, Denzel Washington and hanging out on Willie Nelson’s tour bus with Ray Price and Kris Kristofferson. The last meet up story with Willie and friends was hilarious.

Larry continues to do his style of comedy which some people might consider to be stupid or offensive, like he says get a sense of humor. His shows are very funny, and Cindy and I would go see him again as he added new material in a mix with some old material at his current performance. He mentioned he was on the Jay Leno, Tonight Show 26 times and has done numerous Netflix specials, so he must be doing something right. As he always says, “Get er done”.
